My book report is about the book Flip-Flop Girl, by Katherine Patterson. It is about a girl name Vinnie, whose dad has recently died from cancer. Not able to support the family, Vinnie, her mom and brother Mason, all move to her grandmother’s house in Brownville, Virginia.
Vinnie, hates the new town andalso has to deal with her brother, and his special problems. Ever since her father died, Mason has not spoken, eaten, or done anything else but hang on to his mom and suck his thumb. But now its time for Mason to start Kindergarten, and he still is known as the “strange boy” in Brownsville.
Vinnie is in the homeroom with Mr. Clayton. Thank goodness for Vinnie, Mr. Clayton is the nicest teacher she has ever had. With school going well, a newer girl than Vinnie comes in one day. Lupe Mahoney (the new girl) is strange. She has a weird past that everyone gossips about. Her father is in jail for what she says is “no reason”. Lupe’s mother is dead, and everybody thinks that her dad is in jail because he killed her.
When Lupe comes in one day with a gigantic pumpkin, nobody knows where Lupe got it or how. Vinnie becomes half friends with Lupe, but is not sure about anything Lupe does or says. Lupe gets in trouble for stuff that Vinnie should, but she doesn’t care. And then with Mr. Clayton getting married, and along with that, her daydreams ruined, and her brother disappearing, Vinnie’s life simply crumbles.
